The customer required a reliable UK manufacturing partner capable of producing wiring looms in significant repeat volumes while maintaining a consistent standard across every batch.

Although these assemblies are relatively compact compared with some of the larger and more complex harnesses we manufacture, producing them in their thousands requires a carefully controlled manufacturing process.

Every assembly needs to have the correct cable preparation, wire lengths, terminations, connector configuration, pin positions, sleeving and overall workmanship.

When you’re producing at this volume, it’s not enough for the first few assemblies to be right.

The thousandth loom needs to be manufactured to the same standard as the first.

Controlled Repeat Production

A key part of successful high-volume cable assembly manufacturing is establishing a repeatable production process.

Once a product moves into regular production, efficiency becomes increasingly important – but that efficiency cannot come at the expense of quality.

At Nitronics, our production processes are designed to provide consistency across repeat batches while allowing us to manufacture efficiently at higher volumes.

This is particularly important for OEM customers where a wiring loom or cable assembly forms part of a much larger finished product.

A problem with one relatively small component can potentially create delays, rework and additional costs much further down the production line.

Every Wiring Loom Is Electrically Tested

Manufacturing the loom is only part of the job.

Every completed assembly is electrically tested at Nitronics before despatch.

The testing process verifies the required electrical connections within the loom and allows us to identify potential manufacturing faults before an assembly reaches the customer’s production line.

For this particular application, the wiring looms ultimately form part of gas detection equipment predominantly destined for gas production facilities across the Middle East.

Finding a problem during manufacture in the UK is considerably preferable to discovering it after the assembly has been incorporated into a finished system – particularly when that equipment may ultimately be operating thousands of miles away.

High-volume manufacturing isn’t simply about producing more assemblies in less time.

The real challenge is maintaining the same standard throughout production.

Processes, tooling, workmanship, inspection and testing all contribute to making sure one production batch is consistent with the next.

This allows our customer to receive finished, tested wiring looms ready to enter their own manufacturing process.

It’s also a good example of an area of Nitronics that we perhaps don’t show enough.

We don’t only manufacture complex, low-volume wiring harnesses and prototypes.
